Gonzales Quits

Today Attorney General Alberto Gonzales resigned. This follows months of scrutiny, questioning and heat from both sides of the aisle. However, if it weren't for Democrats' push for change, Gonzo may still be running our judicial system. August turned out to be a good month for change in Washington with Rove and Gonzales both taking a permanent vacation. On tap? September's Iraq War progress report, a vicious debate over phased withdrawal, troop cuts, possible ousting of Iraqi Prime Minister Miliki, and the expected announcement of Republican Presidential candidate Fred Thompson.

Sick Vick pleads Guilty

I'm a dog owner, son of a veterinarian, and compassionate human being. Hearing Michael Vick admit that he not only ran a dogfighting operation but killed at least six dogs in torturous ways really gets to me. What brought this NFL star to engage in barbaric behavior as this? Why does a millionaire athlete do stuff like this? Vick ran Bad Newz Kennels in Virginia and killed dogs. Hanging, drowning and electrocuting dogs that did not perform well in dogfights is not the way to treat man's best friend. I hope and expect the judicial system to send Michael Vick to jail for this and help put a stop to this cruel activity. The NFL should kick him off the field as well. Otherwise they are condoning Sick Vick's actions.

Massive Violence in Iraq

Over 250 people killed in the northern region of Iraq mostly comprised of Kurds, and hundreds wounded yesterday, undermines the Bush regimes' claim that the surge is working. If the goal of the surge was to slow violence and bloodshed in Iraq, than this is a big thorn in Bush's cheek. Only the neo-con establishment and gullible fraction of the American people will believe that the shifting tides of violence is proof that adding thousands of more American G.I.s eight months ago is working. It's human nature for people to believe what they want to believe, but when you have news of hundreds dead in a single day in Iraq it's hard to deny reality. I hope that the majority of Republicans come to their senses this fall and join the Democrats in demanding a phased withdrawal of troops from the war-torn middle eastern country. Iraq was a mistake on a dozen different levels, but continuing to have our military destroyed because we have a stubborn president just doesn't make sense. We should be protecting the homeland, and depleting our defense isn't a good strategy. I recommend removing 20,000 soldiers a month, which will force the leaders of Sunni, Shia and Kurd to work together and broker some deals. Like Colin Powell said, our presence there is like placing a lid on a boiling pot. If we remove the top - which removes steam - then the leaders of that country can start to turn down the temperature on their own.

Small Tornado hits Brooklyn

Last night's storm was incredible. I woke up to terrential rains and thunder. From my 5th floor 1-bedroom it sounded like Baghdad, March 2003. Lightning illuminated the sky. Today the NY Times reported a small tornado hit Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Yes, a tornado in Brooklyn. It's dangerous times in NYC - steam pipe explosions, flooding and tornados!
